All of the weird noises and low wave frequencies and field recordings were captured during a bike trip through the industrial areas around the étang de Berre at the of April 2019, using a portable recorder and some very low frequency receivers. They were the base for improvisations recorded in the basement of la Salle Gueule in Marseille, between two shows in August 2019. The covers were printed from a polymer plate by Artnoose at Deep Ink Letterpress in Berkeley. La Tarasque is a legendary dragon from the valley of the Rhône. Originally, the story comes from the legends of how Christianism was brought in from Palestine, with apostles landing in the marshes of Camargue and befriending the local population by killing this dragon. In the early seventies, when the french state decided on granting the city of Marseille a newly built industrial port, to become the leading refinery area north of the mediterranean sea, some playwriters used the analogy of the Tarasque to talk about the coming industrialisation. The legend said the dragon was eating children, breathing smoke and shitting blood, which is an accurate description of the monster whose belly we inhabit. The head of a lion, tail of a dragon, body of a mammuth with a shell is just a description of something horrible one can think about… So the idea behind this tape was to go around and look at this industrial beast in the eye. I obviously could not get close enough, but still caught some noises.

The first movement is the basis for my interest in ambient music : Either record or recreate naturally occurring sounds, or the closest we get to that in an industrial context, and rearrange them to create music. Once again it starts with the mix of cicadas and electrical nodes in a train station somewhere (I think Miramas). The second part is based around a few lines from the Earthly Paradise of William Morris. The third, at last, is based on a recording captured outside of the memorial for the concentration camp of les Milles south of Aix-en-Provence. The sign said something about how most people who had been kept there were refugees, detained there without having been charged with anything. Church bells were ringing, Flags were clinging onto their polls and trucks were going around. I wondered if the current detentions center, wether the Centres de Rétentions Administratives in France or the ones of ICE in the United states, or the others with different administrative acronyms elsewhere would someday get their memorials as well. May these places & sounds be gone soon.
